Telephones.-The pole-pieces P of a telephone are provided, near the points at which they are secured to the permanent magnet M, with inward extensions N, thereby providing a shunt path for the alternating flux due to the current in the coils. The extensions N may meet or a small air gap may be left. The pole-pieces of a " watch " telephone may be similarly formed. The pole-pieces and diaphragm are preferably of alloyed transformer sheet-iron.
