In a meter such as is described in Specification No. 8832, A.D. 1898, the permanent magnet a of the meter is provided with pole-pieces b, c, which are connected by a bridgepiece d, surrounded by a coil e in parallel with the armature or in series with the mains. At a certain current, this piece becomes saturated and the field through the armature is no longer affected by the magnetic shunt. At' low currents, however, the flux through the piece d decreases, giving less field through the armature, the speed of which consequently increases.
