Abstract

1470556 Rotary cutting machines; worktables; cutters ACUSHNET CO 26 June 1974 28284/74 Headings B3B B3C and B3K [Also in Division A6] In a machine for producing a plurality of dimples or projections on a workpiece such as a golf ball, a golf ball mould or a golf ball hob (a structure of the same shape as a golf ball and used in the production of golf ball moulds) a cutter 44 or heated tool is moved relatively to the workpiece 10 along an axis normal to the spherical surface of the finished structure. The longitudinal axis of the tool intersects the point of intersection of the mutually perpendicular rotational axes of two rotary worktables 14, 20 one of which, 14, is spaced radially from the rotary axis of the other, 20. The turntables 14, 20 are rotated by motors 18, 24 and the tool may be fed along guide 65 by a lead screw driven by motor 53 up to stop 56 and may be rotated by motor 50. The operation may be controlled by means such as perforated tape console 26 an electronic circuit or mechanical linkages. The cutter in Fig. 3 is for cutting a dimple by edge 70 and the fret (the workpiece surface between dimples) by edge 72. The cutter in Fig. 4 cuts a blank 80 by means of a projection forming cutting edge 76 and fret cutting edge 78 to provide a mould surface 82 (projections not shown). The double ended cutter in Fig. 5 is for cutting dimples only.
