Abstract
1470464 Coated electrical conductor SAMUEL MOORE & CO 10 Jan 1975 1130/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division H1] An electrically insulated conductor comprises a conductor, such as a single wire or stranded wire made of Al, Cu, En-coated Cu, Fe or chromel, Alumel (R.T.M.) or constantan alloy, and a layer of heat and radiation resistant insulation having a hardness of at least Shore 45A and a tensile strength at 100% elongation of at least 300 p.s.i. about said conductor, which insulation is the non-thermoplastic product of the electron curing of a thermoplastic elastomer reinforced and hardened with 5-250 parts of a filler per 100 parts of elastomer. The elastomer may be extruded over the conductor and then electron cured at a dosage of 1-20 Mrads. It may comprise chloro-sulphonated polyethylene or ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) terpolymer, the diene being ethylidene- or methylene-norbornene, 1, 4-hexadiene or dicyclopentadiene, and the insulation may comprise a first layer of EPDM and a second layer of halo-sulphonated polyethylene. A number of fillers are specified including clays (particularly kaolin surface coated with vinyl silane), silicates, carbon blacks and metal oxides and the elastomer composition may also contain low-density polyethylene (as hardening agent), plasticisers, anti-oxidants, thermal stabilisers and radiation sensitisers.
