Abstract
1450465 Laminates GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 05270/74 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division H1] A strippable composite of cured polymeric materials suitable for use in the insulation of a metallic electrical conductor comprises a body of an ethylene polymer with a surface adheringly joined to a contacting surface of a body comprising an elastomeric blend of 20-45 parts per 100 parts by weight of a rubbery copolymer or terpolymer of ethylene-propylene admixed with 55-80 parts per 100 parts by weight of polychloroprene or chlorosulphonated polyethylene, the contacting surfaces of the polymeric materials being adheringly joined to each other by means of at least one of the polymeric materials having been cured while the surfaces of the bodies are in adjoining physical contact with each other. The ethylene polymer body may comprise polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate and may contain a peroxide curing agent. The elastomeric blend may contain a peroxide curing agent or a sulphur-accelerator curing system. In the production of an insulated wire or cable the ethylene polymer layer and overlying elastomeric blend may be applied to the metallic conductor by extrusion, the elastomeric blend being rendered semiconductive by incorporating therein 15-75% by weight of an electrically conductive particulate filler, e.g. carbon black, silicon carbide, iron or aluminium particles. The composite may be produced by sequential or tandem extrusion.
