Abstract

Cable for single or multiphase, low medium or high voltage power transmission with an embedded metal sheet to form a screen between a semi-conducting layer situated on the insulation round the conducting core, and an insulating outer layer, which consists of an extruded material such as polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. The screen consists of an Al foil 0.06-0.3 mm thick, or a Cu foil of 0.04-0.2 mm which has on it's oter side a coating on the outer side with a softening point such that on extrusion, the outer insulation layer, and the coating of screen can weld together. The inner side of the Al or Cu foil has on its a protective conducting or semi-conducting layer consisting of a metal precipitate or a synthetic material mixed with a powdered conducting material. The outer layer of screen consists of a thermoplastic drying varnish. Process results in no unstable or unsymmetrical cable generated electric fields. In the case of damage e.g. through a pick blow, the different layers retain good adhesion, thus preventing water infiltration between the screen and the insulation and semi-conductor; eliminating or diminishing corrosion risk.
