Abstract

1470401 Stackers H JUNGHEINRICH & CO MASCHINENFABRIK 20 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 7708/74 Heading A4T A mobile stacker 1 for stacking loads on high level shelves comprises a mast 5 by which a lifting carriage 6 is movable, the upper portion of the mast 5 being bendable as shown an arm 7 mounted on the carriage 6 for lateral displacement, a load carrier 9 mounted for pivotal movement about an axis 8 relative to the arm 7, the stacker further comprising means for determining the position of the lifting carriage relative to a nominal position of the stacker 1 in which the latter is aligned with a vertical stack of shelves, in order that the stacker 1 can be moved to compensate for the bending of the mast's upper portion so that the load carrier 9 can be aligned with a particular shelf. The said means comprises a first element 51 connected by an arm so the upper portion of the mast, the element 51 being a transmitter of optical, acoustic or radio signals, and a second element in the form of a series of elements 52, 53 ..., so that a signal beam 54 is transmitted from the transmitter 51 to the series of elements. When there is no bending of the mast upper portion the signal beam 54 is transmitted to the element 52 and when there is maximum bending of the mast upper portion, shown as 5", the beam 54 is transmitted to the element at the other end of the series. If the element 51 transmits optical signals the elements 52, 53 ... can be reflectors thereby providing a visual indication to the driver of the stacker as to the amount the stacker 1 must be moved in order to compensate for the bending of the mast. Advantageously, the second element is so responsive to the signal beam 54 as to cause a control signal to be applied via control means to the drive means of the stacker in order to move the latter in dependence on the extent that the mast bends. This control means could comprise a counter arranged to count the number of elements intervening between an element of the series which is illuminated or irradiated by the signal 54 and an element at one end of the series.
