Apparatus for applying coils to an uncoiler comprising a lifting table 3, which may be wheeled, and which lifts the coil 23 to the level of the uncoiler axis 2 and means 5 for de-energizing the lifting drive means 4 when the axes of the coil 23 and uncoiler 2 are aligned, is characterized by a detector 9, which is connected or connectible to the lifting table 3 to move in unison therewith in the opposite direction at a speed which is equal or proportional to the speed of the lifting table 3 and which detector 9 is adjusted to have in an initial position the same distance from the axis of the uncoiler as the contact surface between the lifting table 3 and the coil 23 and when contacting the periphery of the coil generates a signal and/or de-energizes the lifting drive means 4. The solenoid valve 5 and a solenoid valve 14 are activated at the same time so that a pressure member 12 moving from the inoperative position indicated by dotted lines follows the upgoing stop 11, engages it, and moves upwardly in unison with it. The movement of the lifting table is transmitted by parts 17-22 to a holder 8 so that a radiator-receiver 9 of a reflected light barrier moves oppositely to the lifting table 3 in such a manner that the distances A and B are always the same. When the light beam is tangential to the coil 23, the axes of the coil and uncoiler are aligned, and the light beam is partly obstructed so that the receiver 9 delivers a changed electrical value which de-activates the solenoid valve 5. In one embodiment a follower 24 is centrally disposed in the lifting table 3 to eliminate the need for a consideration of the angle of inclination of the supporting surfaces 3<SP>1</SP> in the selection of the transmission ratio of pinions 17 and 20. In another embodiment the light barrier is replaced by a limit switch 26 having an actuating plunger 27. The initial position is adjusted so that the distance B is measured from the plunger 27 when it is in the activated position indicated by dotted lines.
