Abstract

1,212,269. Feeding coils to unwinding station. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. 21 Oct., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 49748/68. Heading B3E. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for aligning a coil 5, to be unwound, coaxially with an uncoiler comprises a lifting table 3 and a feeler roller 7 respectively contacting the coil periphery at diametrically opposed points so that on lifting displacement of the table, respective linkages connected to the table and the feeler produce electrical signals from synchros 29, 35, which signals represent respectively the distance (A) from the uncoiler axis to the contact surface between the table and the coil and the distance (B) from the uncoiler axis to the contact surface between the feeler and the coil and which are fed to a comparator 41 which actuates a switch 43 to terminate movement of the table when the signals are equal, at which point (A) and (B) are both equal to the coil radius. The linkages comprise transmissions 10, 11 with restoring means 30, 36, whereby the system may be returned to its initial position when the coil has been secured on to a reel mandrel 2. The table carries a driver 25, a set screw which engages after a predetermined lost motion an abutment 26 secured on a rack meshing with a pinion 28. The feeler roller 7 (which may be a reverse roller of the uncoiler) drives its transmission 11 through a backing roller 19, pivoted arm 18, set screw 33 and positioning lever 34 set from the screw with a predetermined lost motion. A pneumatic piston-cylinder unit 6 fed from solenoid valves 31, 37 and throttling check-valves 32 urges the feeler to contact the coil, pressure being vented during lifting by the valve 37. The table is driven by an hydraulic cylinder 21, throttling check-valves 23, 24 and solenoid valve 22. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), the feeler is movable vertically by piston-cylinder unit (6) connected via a chain and sprocket linkage (9) to transmission (11) driving a meter and pointer mechanism (14, 15). The lifting table is similarly connected to a mechanism (12, 13). The meter pointers drive in opposing directions and indicate a coaxial alignment when they are at similar scale positions. The pointers may carry electric contact fingers, or a magnetic pick-up and lug to operate a switch to de-energize the lifting table. Alternative arrangements of the lifting table contact surfaces (16, 17) are given in Fig. 3 (not shown) and a pivot arm (6, 7, 18) B illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown).
