1341657 Grinding BJURO VZAIMOZAMENYAEMOSTI V METALLOOBRABATYVAJUSCHE I PROMYSHLENNSTI MINISTERSTVA STANKOSTROITELNOI I INSTRUMENTALNOI PROMYSHLENNOSTI SSSR 21 March 1972 13109/72 Headings B3B and B3D [Also in Division G1] A device for checking the dimensions of a series of parts 38 mounted on a reciprocating table 37 during grinding by a wheel 39 comprises a feeler arm 13 pivoted at 11, and a locking mechanism for the feeler arm which releases the feeler arm for short spaces of time at regular intervals, the locking mechanism being such that the feeler arm when locked may still be pivoted anticlockwise by a member 38 passing under it. The locking mechanism comprises a strip 18 mounted on the feeler arm by spring strip 19, a pivoted lever 23, a spring 20 urging lever 23 clockwise to frictionally grip strip 18 between anvils 21, 24, and an electromagnet 2 for releasing the locking mechanism. The position of the feeler arm is sensed by means of a pneumatic nozzle 7 supplied with compressed air through regulator 40, constriction 6 and conduit 5 and co-operating with a plate 16. A gauge 3, which indicates the pressure in nozzle 7 and issues a control signal to the grinding machine when the parts 38 have been ground to the required size, is connected to conduit 5 via an electromagnetic valve 9 and a pneumatic valve 10, the control chamber of the latter being connected to conduit 5. Electromagnet 2 and electromagnetic valve 9 are actuated for short periods t 1 and t 3 respectively (Figs. 3 and 4) at regular intervals by means of a program device 4 which includes a motor 30 driving a pair of cams 28, 29 with lobes which operate switches 31, 32 (Fig. 2, not shown). Release of the feeler arm 13 in periods t 1 allows the feeler arm to adjust to the height of parts 38 either by abutting a part 38 during period t 1 or by falling into a gap between parts during period t 1 and being cammed to the correct position by one of the parts 38 during period t 2 . During periods t 1 and t 2 valve 9 is closed, and valve 9 is only opened during period t 3 so that gauge 3 does not register any pressure fluctuations caused by feeler arm 13 registering a gap between parts 38. If the feeler arm should register with a gap between parts 38 sufficiently large that tip 14 is still in the gap at the end of period t 2 , the pressure in conduit 5 will be sufficiently low for pneumatic valve 10 to maintain the position in which it closes conduit 8, and gauge 3 will not be connected to conduit 5. The pneumatic measuring system may be replaced by an inductive or capacitative system.
