Abstract

1470373 Liquid fuel injector; fuel injection pumps BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 12 June 1974 [30 June 1973] 31262/73 Heading F1A and F1B A fuel injector assembly comprises a valve element 16 having a co-axial bore within which a plunger 18 is slidable, the motion of the plunger acting to increase the pressure within an annular chamber 15, the result of which is upward movement of valve element 16 and flow of fuel through a nozzle 13. A passage 47 in plunger 18 is closed by a non return valve consisting of a ball 51 and spring 49 contained in a chamber 40 within valve element 16, the passage communicating with a fuel inlet 12 via a cross boring 48 and annular channel 42. The lower portion of valve element 16 is tapered producing a conical surface 46 ending in a pintle shaped tip 45 held resiliently in contact with the nozzle 13 by a spring washer 44. Fuel is supplied to the assembly under pressure sufficient to overcome the tension in spring 49, the fuel entering chambers 40 and 15 which communicate via passages 41. After the chambers are filled, plunger 18 is caused by the action of a solenoid 50 to descend thereby increasing the pressure within chambers 40 and 15; the pressure within chamber 15 acts upon conical surface 46 to force valve element 16 upward against the tension in spring washer 44 enabling fuel to be injected through nozzle 13 and into a combustion chamber, the quantity of fuel injected being dependent upon the stroke of plunger 18. In a second embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown), the annular chamber 15 is linked directly with the inlet 12 which contains a non return valve allowing pressurized fuel to flow into the chamber whilst preventing the escape of fuel through the inlet 12 as plunger 18 descends. In a third embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown) the ball 48 and spring 49 are replaced by a solenoid operated valve. In this embodiment, the stroke of plunger 18 is constant, the metering of fuel being governed by the duration for which the solenoid operated valve is held open.
