Abstract

1469073 Optical fibre STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 17 July 1975 30095/75 Heading C1M An optical fibre made by drawing down a preform comprises a cladding enveloping a core made by a chemical vapour reaction, the core comprising a central region of substantially constant diameter and composition, and terminal regions of increasing diameter and graded composition, the graded composition being such that the core/cladding refractive index difference decreases towards the fibre ends, and being matched with the increasing core diameter so as to provide a normalized frequency within limits which provide the central region and terminal regions with the same single bound non-radiating mode or the same set of bound non-radiating modes. The core material is preferably deposited (by a thermally induced reaction from which hydrogen or its compounds are excluded) in the bore of a tube of lower refractive index cladding glass (the tube is preferably itself formed by vapour reaction on the interior of rotating tube 1 of silica glass). The gas reaction mixture passes through the tube from 4 to 5, the core thickness being varied by varying temperature or flow rate of the gas, and the composition varied by means of the gas composition. The reaction is induced by flame zone 6 which traverses the tube (e.g. to give a temperature of at least 1500‹ C.). The core may have a central diameter of about 3 Á and a terminal diameter of about 30 Á, and the central refractive index difference may be 1% compared with a terminal difference of 0À01%. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,427,327.
