Abstract
1427327 Glass fibres for optical waveguides STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 24 May 1973 [8 June 1972] 26770/72 Heading C1M In the manufacture of glass fibres for optical waveguides in which a glass layer is deposited upon the bore of a glass tube having a lower refractive index than that of the deposited layer, the layer is deposited by a chemical vapour reaction in the absence of hydrogen and hydrogen containing compounds, the resulting structure being heated, its bore collapsed and the structure drawn into glass fibre. The vapour reaction may be a thermally induced or an R.F. excited vapour reaction, particularly a halide oxidation reaction. Preferably the tube and layer are of silica, a dopant being codeposited into the silica in formation of the layer. The dopant is preferably titania. Reference has been directed by Comptroller to Specification 1,322,993.
