Abstract

1467002 Spring brake actuators; internal shoe drum brakes AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 7 March 1974 [8 March 1973] 11241/73 Heading F2E In a spring brake actuator 27 of the kind comprising an actuator rod 26, Fig. 2, urged by spring 38, 39 in the brake applying direction or held (as shown) against the action of the springs by fluid pressure within an enclosure bounded by a movable wall 34 associated with the actuator rod 26 and by part 32 of a casing 31, 32, the brake actuator 27 is mounted on a vehicle in use by a mounting member 28 having a passage through which the actuator rod 26 extends, the casing 31, 32 is secured to the mounting member 28 by releasable securing means, e.g. nut 36, and the casing is movable relative to the mounting member 28 along a path parallel to the path of movement of the actuator rod 26 when the nut 36 is released. To release the brake manually when the pressure supply has failed, nut 36 is loosened and screwed towards the back-plate 10 of the brake; casing 31, 32 is manually pushed in the same direction away from a stop 30, being guided by an aperture 35 in casing part 31. The actuator rod 26 is forced to move leftwards at the same time by an annular stop 42 (which, when enclosure 34, 32 is exhausted, is engaged by the rim 41 of a top-hat-section member 40) via the top-hat-section member and a radially-extending plate 37. Preferably the actuator rod 26 is pivoted to one end of a bell crank lever 23, Fig. 2, acting on a shoe 16, the bell crank lever being hinged at its elbow to a strut 22 which acts on a shoe 15, in a duo-servo brake. A spring 20 extending between an anchorage on back-plate 10 and the lower end of shoe 15 urges the top of the shoe away from a fixed abutment 11. A double-ended fluid-pressure wheel cylinder 13 is provided for service braking.
