Abstract
1460280 Brake systems; service cylinders CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO Ltd 6 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 22535/73 Heading F2F A brake actuating mechanism comprises a cylindrical housing 1 containing a piston structure 2 defining a spring chamber 27 and a compressed air chamber 10, and a separate hydraulic service cylinder unit 11 clamped or bolted to the housing 1, a plunger 20 providing a thrusttransmitting connection between a bolt 23 threaded to a nut 22 secured to the piston structure 1 and a piston 21 of the hydraulic cylinder unit 11 the bolt 23 being rotatable after a spring application of the brake for effecting release of the brake. In the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 the unit 11 has a radial mounting flange 12 which is held fast against a ring structure 8 of the housing 1 by a two-part clamping ring 13. A hollow axial extension 14 projects into the housing 1 and into sliding engagement with a tubular axial extension 5 of the piston structure 2. The extension 5 extends within a hub portion 6 of a detachable end plate 3, and the nut 22 is secured to the enlarged free end of the extension 5. The plunger 20 is located within the extension 14 and one end of the plunger 20 is formed integral with or has operative connection with the piston 21. A breather drain 26 arranged at the lower side of the installed assembly communicates with the spring chamber 27 via slots 28 in the peripheral rim of the end plate 3. Normally compressed air in chamber 10 holds the piston structure 2 in the retracted position whilst a predetermined fall in the air pressure permits the piston structure 2 to move towards the unit 11, this movement being transmitted through the nut and bolt gear 22, 23 and the plunger 20 to the piston 21 to apply the brake. To release the brake while a supply of compressed air is not available, the head 24 of bolt 23 is rotated after removal of a dust cover 25 to permit the piston 21 to retract under the action of the brake pull-off springs. In the modification of Fig. 3 the hydraulic cylinder unit has an annular flange 30 bolted directly to an annular end wall 29 integral with housing 1. The end wall 29 is formed with an integral sleeve portion 32 upon which piston structure 2 slides.
