Abstract
1515239 Multi-disc brakes; wear adjustment; pistons BENDIX CORP 9 June 1976 [30 June 1975] 23878/76 Headings F2E and F2T [Also in Division F1] Fluid pressure motor assemblies 56 for actuating a multiple disc aircraft brake 40, 42 are fitted in circumferentially spaced chambers 30 in a carrier 26 and each assembly 56 comprises a piston 75 having a skirt section 76 slidably carried in a cavity defined by a sleeve 64 and slidably carried on a tubular section 74, the piston 75 being responsive to pressurized fluid supplied to act on the annular end of skirt section 76, and adjust and reset apparatus 106, 116, 122, 124, 130 being coaxially arranged within the tubular section 74 but isolated as by seals 82, 83 from the pressurized fluid to prevent contamination thereof by particles of metal. As shown, each motor assembly 56 has an annular member 59 threadedly engaged in chamber 30 and receiving, preferably with press fit, the sleeve 64, the annular member 59 being formed with the tubular section 74. The piston 75 comprises a base section 78 provided with a mating block of heat insulation material 90 held in place by a retaining cap 92. The adjust and reset apparatus comprises a tubular member 124 within tubular section 74 and enclosing a radially deformable tube 122. A stem 106 extends coaxially through tube 122 and has a rectangularly shaped head 110 removably trapped in a recess (112) in the base section 78 of piston 75. The stem 106 has a threaded end 114 to receive a button 116 held in position by a locknut 120 and engaging the inner surface of tube 122. A compression spring engaging a washer 134 acts to retract tubular member 124, tube 122, stem 106 and piston 75 to an extent defined by a snap ring 136 secured to annular member 59. To actuate the motor assembly 56, pressurized fluid is supplied to act on the annular end of skirt section 76 via a passage 87, an annular chamber 86 and openings 84 in sleeve 64. The piston 75 and pistons 75 in the other motor assemblies 56 are moved to move a pressure plate 50 towards a fixed backing plate 36 to compress stators and rotors 42, 40 therebetween. With piston 75 move stem 106, tube 122, tubular member 124 compressing spring 130 until washer 134 engages a shoulder 142 on tubular section 74. If as a result of wear of linings 38 (on plate 36), 44 (on stators 40), 52 (on plate 50) the rotors and stators 40, 42 are not then fully engaged, the piston 75 will continue to move and with it stem 106 to cause button 116 to plastically deform tube 122 thereby compensating for wear of linings 38, 44, 52. The adjust and reset apparatus is not in contact with the pressurized fluid but is exposed to ambient air. This allows of easier disassembly of the apparatus.
