Driving rotary machines.-A rotary press having a plurality of sets of printing mechanisms is driven by a number of transmission shafts each driving a number of sets by a worm or worms engaging one or more of the rotary elements in each set, the transmission shafts being separately driven by motors a and geared together to rotate uniformly, or one of these shafts being driven by a motor and the others driven by gearing from it. Fig. 1 shows a multi-deck machine in which the printing and impression cylinders e, f, ink-distributing drum g and fountain roll h of the two sets on each deck are driven by worms c on a transmission shaft b driven by a separate motor, and the shafts bare geared together by a vertical shaft and bevel gear. One only of the shafts b may be driven by a motor and the others driven from it by a chain. The machine may be arranged with the decks other than superposed, and the transmission shafts may be arranged vertically between the sets, a worm thereon driving a rotary element in each of two sets. The worm drives a worm-wheel or a helical toothed wheel, and motion may be transmitted from the worm-driven wheel to other rotary elements in a set by spur, helical or other gear.
