DOUBLE PRINTING-DRUM FOR WARPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,069, dated May 2, 1 905.

Be it known that I, FRANZ SoriMrD'r, factory proprietor, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 7 Edisonstrasse, Oberschoneweide, near Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Printing-Drums for VVarps, of which the following is a speci fication.
The subject-matter of the present invention is a double printing-drum for warps, wherein it is essential that there be two drums of different circumference which can simultaneously be printed with the same pattern, as both drums receive the same angular rotation. This uniform angular rotation is obtained by the intercalation of gearing. It is furthermore essential that the two warp-drums of different circumference be driven together with a drum containing the design or pattern, the driving thereof being effected in that driving-crowns are provided on the circumference of the drums. By means of this arrangement it is obtained that a pattern from the same design is simultaneously printed upon different lengths of warp and that when working with one upon the other the same number of printed strips is printed off and, viz., corresponding to the circumferences, upon the larger drum printed strips of greater breadth and on the smaller drum printed strips of smaller width, the advantage being obtained that the patterns upon both drums are entirely the same under all circumstances. The new apparatus can, for instance, be used for simultaneously producing the warps for the seats and pockets used in covering sofas. These were formerly made separately on different machines, the drawback in printing them in this way being that owing to mistakes confusion occurred between the patterns of the seat-warps and of the pocket-warps. This drawback is prevented by the compulsory connection of the two drums of different circumference to each other. Furthermore, the advantage is obtained that the two patterns of different size can be made with a great saving of time and labor. WVhereas formerly two persons were required for serving two machines, one hand only is required for the new apparatus. By the use of the patterndrum common to both drums the advantage is furthermore obtained of rapid adjustment and a further economy of time and labor. As the design is already printed upon the pattern-drum or the like, all the operative has to do is to move this drum and no longer needs to read off figures from the design (pattern) and edge of the printing-drum prior to making the adjustment.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view representing the improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The drawings show a constructional form of the new apparatus.
The drum 1, of large diameter, is mounted on the shaft 3, as is also the drum 2, of smaller diameter. On their circumference both drums have toothed crowns 4 5. By means of the hand-wheel 6 and the bevel-wheel gear 7 the movement can be passed on to the toothcrowns 4 and 5 by means of the spur-wheel gearing 8 9 and of the shaft 10 11. A cogwheel 12, mounted on the shaft 10, serves to drive the pattern-drum 14 by means of the spur-wheel 13.
The method of operation is as follows: If the operative turns the hand-wheel 6, then the pattern-drum 14 and the warp-drums 1 and 2 will turn at the same time. Owing to the wheel transmission-gearing, the war p-d rums 1 and 2 have the same angular rotations. Upon this rotation the operative is guided by the pattern-drum 14:, which he adjusts, for instance, to an indicator 16 upon those strips of color which are to be printed upon the warpdrums at the corresponding points.
Fig. 3 of the drawings shows a rod 15, carrying the indicator 16, which is placed close to the periphery of the pattern-drum 14.
The printing can be eifeeted in the manner known by means of colored bands or the like.
The apparatus described can be altered in various ways. For instance, instead of the toothed-wheel gearing chain-wheels or the like can be used. It is in any case essential that the two drums of unequal circumference stand in such relationship to or dependence upon each other by means of intermediate devices that they ,always execute uniform angular rotations.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with two printing-drums of different diameter, and means for imparting the same angular velocity to both drums and operated in unison therewith, of a patterncarrier common to both printing-drums.
2. A double printing-drum for warps, comprising two drums of difierent circumference and provided with driving-crowns, a common drum carrying the design, and a transmitting device for imparting the same angular rotation to the driving-crowns from the drum carrying the design.
3. In a'device of the character described, the combination of a pattern-carrier, an indicating device, one of said members being movable relative to the other, a movable printing member, means for causing the movement of one of said movable members, to cansearelative movement of the printing-drum, a second printing-drum, and means for causing. the said means to produce a movement of the second drum at the same angular velocity as the movement of the first drum.
4. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a movable pattern-drum, an indicating device arranged in proximity to the pattern-drum, a movable printing-drum, means for causing the movement of the pattern-drum, to produce a relative movement of the printing-drum, a second printing-drum, and means for causing the movement of the first printing-drum, to produce an equal angular movement of the second printing-drum. 5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a printing-drum having crown-teeth at one end, a shaft having a gearwheel engaging said crown-teeth, a patterndrum having a gear connected therewith, a gear on said shaft engaging the gear on the pattern-drum, a third gear on said shaft, an operating-shaft having a gear engaging said third gear, a hand-wheel on said second shaft, a second printing-drum having crown-teeth on its periphery, a third shaft having a gear engaging said crown-teeth, a second gear on said latter shaft, and a fourth gear on said first shaft engaging the gear on said third shaft.
