To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR TERREY and JOHN HoorER BUTLER, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing respectively, at 26 Keith Road, Hayes, MiddleseX, England, and Hillingdon, East Keswick, in the county'of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to .Rotary Printing Presses (for which we have filed an appli-k` cation in GrreatV Britain No. 9399, April 12, 1919, Patent No. 146638), of which the following 'is a specification.
This invention relates to transmission gear for rotary printing presses and has among its objects to provide effective'vmea-ns for tra'nsmitting movement to the plate and impression cylinders of the printing couples, to secure greater economy in the distribution of motive power in a printing press, `to reduce the noise and generally to avoid the disadvantages resulting from the use of a series of spur wheels commonly used in printing presses for the transmission of movement to the respective printing couples, distributing drums and other elements of the press. v
According to the invention a rotary printing press, having a plurality of sets of printing mechanism, is provided with means for l eecting the rotation of the plate and impression cylinders, ink distributing drum Aand other moving elements of the said sets, 4 comprising a number of transmission shafts each common to a number of sets ofl printing mechanism, worms carried by each transmission shaft and serving to rotate one or more of the rotary elements of each of the respective sets of` printing mechanism driven by that transmission shaft by means of worm wheels or spiral toothed or helical wheels, a motor directly coupled to each transmission shaft, and meails to ensure the same van lar velocity for all such transmission s afts.
According to the invention also .in a modification there ma be provided a single motor directly coup ed to a transmission'shaft, and one or more similar transmission shafts receiving motion by a drive from the motor or the directly driven transmission shaft by means servin also to ensure the same an 1&1' Velocity if all the transmission shals.

The application of the invention is hereinafter described with referenceto theaccompanyingl diagrammatic drawings.
Flgure 1 represents in side elevation a multlple deck printing press provided with horizontally disposedl transmission or worm shafts each driven by a separate motor mounted on the press frame.
Figure 2 is a part plan corresponding to Figure 1 to illustrate theposition of the worm wheels in relation to the cylinders.
Figure 3v is anenlarged view in elevation 65 of, an impression "cylinder with its wormv wheel and worm to illustrate a method of mounting the worm bracket on the impression cylinder, bearing box.
Figure 4 represents two decks of a print- 70 a multiple deck rotary printing press as illustrated in Fi res 1 and 2, we provide the printing mec anism on each deck to be operated by a separate motor a and we employ a transmission shaft I; to extend along each deck and having worms c mounted l thereon for engagement with worm wheels d mounted upon the spindles of the impression cylinder e, plate cylinder f, ink distributing druml gand ink fountain roller L.
The worms and worm wheels are provided right or left handed -according to the direction of rotation which it is desiredto give The respective motors a are mounted in vertical line in brackets z' suitably provided for the purpose at 90 one endof the machine. The transmission shafts b are disposed parallel and their ends opposite to that at which the motors are rovided have mounted thereon bevel wheels,
j to engage with corresponding bevel wheels Ic mounted. upon a vertical shaft Z, or any. other means providedsuch as a silent chain to ensure the synchronous movement of the respective transmission shafts. ,By such means it will be understood that each of the,
members ofthe printing couple is directly operated from the transmission shaft as are also the ink distributing drum and the fountain roller.
, It will be understood-that any convenient method of mounting the worin drive in relation to the respective' cylinders may be adopted. For-example the worms o may be loosely mounted upon the transmission .shaft b So as to be capable of sliding longitudinally along the shaft for adjustment of the cylinders, but may be caused to rotate with the `shaft by means of a feather engaging a keyway extending the length of the shaft or any other suitable means for the samepurpose maybe adopted'. The worms c. may be maintained in position 1n respect to the cylinders by means of brackets fm, (Fig.
3) secured upon-the bearing boxes ofthe cylinders. p
i It will be alsor understood Jthat the relative dispositionof the transmission 'shafts that are to be directly driven from the transmission shaft may be disposed at one side or c at opposite sides-of the transmission shaft.
For exam le a horizontal'transmission shaft may/ be isposed beneath the axis of the plate cylinder and the ink drum and above I the axis of the impression cylinder of the respective couples.
It willY` be understood that movement may be imparted to a number of transmission shafts from a single motor without sacrifice in the utility of the`invention. Such an arrangement is shownf" in Figure 7 wherein the two transmission shafts are connected to` gether by a silent chain device having the chain 0 passingaround wheels p mounted upon the adjacent extremities of the shafts b.
We claim:
1. ln a rotary lrinting press having a plurality of sets of rotary printing mechanism, each comprising a plate cylmder, an
distributing drum, comprising a number of transmlsslon shafts each common to a numnaaapsef ber of setsofprinting.mechanism, worms carried by the said transmission shafts and serving directly to cause the rotation of the plate cylinder, impression cylinder Iand ink 'distributing drum of each of the respective sets of rintinga mechanism, and worm, spiral or elical toothed wheels/for engagement with the Asaid worms and means for operating the said press, substantially as described.,
2. In a rotary printing press having a plurality of sets of rotary printing mechanism,each comprising a platecyl1nder, an impression cylinder and an ink distributing drum, means for effecting' the rotation of the plate and impression cylinders, and ink distributing drum, comprising a number of transmission shafts each common vto a number of sets of printing mechanism, worms carried by the said transmission shafts andservingdirectly to cause the rotation of the' plate cylinder, impression cylinder'and ink distributing drum ofl each of respective ysets of printing mechanism, worm, spiral or helical toothedv wheels for engagement with the said worms, and means to ensure the same angular velocity for the said transmission shafts and means for 0perating the said press, substantially as describe f 3. In a rotary printing press having a plurality of sets of rotary printing mechanism, each comprising a plate cylinder, an impression cylinder and an ink distributing drum, means 'for effecting the rotation of the plate and impression cylinders, and ink distributing drum, comprising a number of vtransmission. shafts each common to a number of sets of printing mechanism, worms carried by the said transmission shafts and serving directly to cause the rotation of the plate cylinder, impression cylinder and ink distributing drum of each of the respective sets of printing mechanism, worm, spiral or helical toothed wheels for engagement with the said worms, and gear between the said transmissionshafts, and a motor for operating the press, substantially as described.
