Abstract

1466346 Foundary vessels USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 1 March 1974 [1 March 1973] 9447/74 Heading F4B A slidable gate for controlling the flow of liquid metal from a bottom-pour vessel has a refractory body and a collector nozzle 19 formed from a tube 20 of refractory material which resists erosion and has a high thermal conductivity and which is fitted with a replaceable tip 24 of a refractory which has a lower thermal conductivity than the tube 20 to reduce the tendency for the metal to solidify at the discharge end. The tube 20 is enclosed by a metal jacket 21 and held by a layer of refractory cement 22. The tip 24 has a metal casing 25 and a layer of cement 26. The tip may be attached by a V-section band clip 28 engaging lips on the two parts. Alternatively the tip may be held on by spring clips engaging a groove in jacket 21 or by screwthreads. The tip is made of a refractory having less alumina than the tube 20, and containing fire-clay or silica.
