Abstract
801,519. Degasifying molten metals. DORTMUND-HORDER HUTTENUNION AKT.-GES. March 15, 1957 [March 16, 1956], No. 8647/57. Class 72 A vacuum, vessel for degasifying molten metal has an inlet and/or outlet with a refractory lining surrounded by a metal casing sealed by a metal plate or tubular element embedded in the refractory material adjacent the inlet or outlet, one edge of the plate or tubular element being air-tightly connected to the casing and cooled at that point the other edge or end being in contact with the molten metal. As shown in Fig. 1 the vacuum vessel 4 having an outlet 5 and refractory lining 10 surrounded by metal casing 9, is sealed by tubular element 12 when the end of outlet 5 dips beneath the surface of the molten metal in ladle 6. The annular space 14 between refractory tubes 10 and 11 is filled by molten metal which melts the lower part of easing 9 and tubuar element 12 to seal the joint between lining 10 and casing 9, the amount of melting being limited by the cooling jacket 13 surrounding casing 9. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the inlet from pot 17 to the vacuum vessel 4 is sealed by the conical shaped metal element 25, connected at its lower end to the casing 3, the upper end of which melts on contact with the molten metal the amount of melting being limited by cooling tube 27. The outlet from vessel 4 consists of the pipe 21 surrounded by a metal casing 29 lined with refractory 30 which is sealed by an apertured disc 31 inserted in the lower part 32 of the lining and gas-tightly connected to the casing 29. The outlet is sealed by molten metal flowing through a pipe 21 which melts a portion of the apertured disc 31, the melting being limited by cooling coil 33.
