Abstract
1465484 Thermal regenerators G APPLEGATE 8 Feb 1974 [21 March 1973] 13484/73 Heading F4K In a rotary matrix type thermal regenerator wherein the matrix rotor 3 is rotatable with a casing 1, the rotor is carried on a shaft 9 mounted for rotation in a water-cooled bearing or bearings (such as 10, 11) situated to one side only of the casing 1 and externally thereof. As shown, the bearings are mounted on a bracket 8 secured to the casing. In an alternative arrangement the shaft is hollow and is mounted for rotation about an internal bearing rod projecting into the shaft and forming a bearing therewith which is water cooled. The rotor 3 may be subdivided internally into compartments by radially extending partitions 22 which may be corrugated wholly or in part as indicated at 23 and 24 to accommodate expansion of the heat transfer material in said compartments. Such material may consist of a porous ceramic material (Fig. 4) which may be in layers. Or the heat transfer material may comprise any of the materials described in Specification 1,435,101. Alternatively the rotor may comprise a disc of porous ceramic material.
