Abstract

1465332 Making colour television shadow masks HITACHI Ltd 7 Aug 1974 [8 Aug 1973] 34828/74 Heading B3A A method of fabricating a shadow mask for a tube of a colour television comprises annealing a shadow mask material, rolling the annealed material to a desired thickness, annealing the rolled material, skin-passing the annealed material, photo-etching the material and shaping the material of the shadow mask. The second annealing operation is carried out at 550‹ to 750‹ C., preferably 660‹ to 700‹ C., to achieve a grain size of A.S.T.M. number 7 to 8. The skin pass step involves a rolling reduction of 0À5 to 5À0% to eliminate stretcher strains of the iron shadow mask material. The photo-etching steps involve coating the material with sensitizer; exposure to ultraviolet light, development with a hot-water spray, burning the photo-sensitive film at 320‹ C. for 5 minutes, and etching with a spray of ferric chloride solution to cut apertures of predetermined size. The mask-shaping steps involve an optional roller levelling operation, a pressshaping operation to form the curvature and side walls of the mask, a blackening of the mask surface to produce a corrosion resistant layer and assembly of the mask.
