Abstract

1463798 Determination of oxygen demand KEENE CORP 24 July 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 31049/75 Heading G1B Apparatus for determination of B.O.D. in an activated sludge sewage treatment system comprises a reaction vessel 14 closed to the atmosphere in which waste water from tank 10 is to be collected, means, as shown low-pressure inlet air source 54, constant flow regulator 50, lines 48, 40, 38, blower 32 and porous air diffuser 36, for directing inlet air into and through the waste water in vessel 14, an outlet duct 26, 28 for conducting air departing from the waste water collected in reaction vessel 14, oxygen sensing means 60 and second means 72, 70 for conducting air from the outlet duct to the oxygen sensing means for measuring the residual oxygen in this air. The initial oxygen content of the air may be measured by operating valve 42 to connect lines 44 and 70 to allow flow of inlet air to the sensor. The flow of inlet air through line 48 immersed in the waste water serves to adjust the temperature of the inlet air and casing 86 for the sensor is heat-insulated. A constant flow of waste water from tank 10 to vessel 14 is provided by pump 22. The output of sensor 60 may be used to control operations in tank 10.
