Abstract
1463375 Regulation of decarburization during refinement of pig iron FRIED KRUPP GmbH 28 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9135/74 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Pig iron is refined by blowing oxygen into a melt in a refining vessel having a restricted outlet for gaseous reaction products wherein the effective cross-sectional area of the outlet is increased or decreased respectively in response to decrease or increase in the pressure within the vessel. Oxygen may be blown through lance 2 into converter 1 upon the method of which is set a water cooled pressure load 5 (which may consist of 2 parts) which is connected to the refining vessel by a moist seal of loam or clay 4 in annular cap 3 the pressure load containing a water cooled adjustible gas outlet opening 12 and a waste gas load 14. The blowing lance 2 may be arranged in a water cooled guide 9, the periphery of the adjustible gas outlet opening 12 being coated with graphite or metal impregnated graphite and the seal between the guide part 9 and the blowing lance 2 consisting of a two part graphite or metal impregnated graphite ring. The partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the pressure load may be measured by water cooled apparatus 13 which is protected by inner wall 7. Alternatively the pressure load may be sealed to the converter by toothed water cooled sealing surface 22' and 1' in Fig. 4 which are separated by an asbestos or cardboard ring 23 and the pressure regulated in the pressure load by raising or lowering water cooled sealing plate 24 with respect to upper load surface 22, a water cooled labyrinth seal separating the pressure load from the waste gas load 14.
