Abstract

999,928. Seals. DEMAG A.G. Jan. 31, 1963 [Feb. 1, 1962], No. 4100/63. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F4] In a sealing arrangement for closing the gap 4 between a movable hood 2 and a chimney 1 for conducting waste gases from an oxygen blast converter 3, Fig. 1, at least one chamber 5 is provided above the hood 2 and has a flexible wall 6a which acts as a sealing member upon deformation by pressure fluid supplied to the interior of the chamber. The chamber 5 is bounded by a member 6 secured to the hood and by the wall 6a which is in the form of a flexible membrane which may be protected by asbestos insulation 7 and a shield 8. The shield 8 may have sufficient elasticity or be composed of springs to move the membrane away from the surface of the chimney 1 when the pressure is released from the chamber 5 while the hood 2 is raised or lowered. The fluid in the form of a gas or a liquid, which may also act as a coolant, is supplied through a pipe 9. The circulation of the fluid in the chamber is controlled by the lifting gear for the hood so that when the gear is operated the pressure in the chamber is released. A gaseous seal may also be provided continuously, or only when the pressure is released from the chamber, by introducing nitrogen into the space 11 through a pipe 10. The hood is formed with a projection 12 to scrape deposits off the surface of the chimney 11. In Fig. 2 sealing is provided by a member 15 passing between annular chambers 17, 18 constituted by inflatable tube seals and retaining members 19. The member 15 dips into sand or liquid contained in a trough 16 and providing an additional seal. The inflatable rings and membranes may be of rubber or synthetic material. Flexible metal membranes which may be corrugated may also be used.
