Abstract
1,003,956. Charging blast furnaces. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. April 12, 1962 [April 18, 1961], No. 14202/62. Heading F4B. In a bell-type airtight charging device for a blast furnace, the sealing surface around the hopper outlet opening is protected from erosion damage by the ingoing charge by a sleeve which drops into position when the cone is lowered. In the form shown a rotary hopper 11 closable by a cone 9 surmounts a single charge hopper 18 closable by a cone 19. The cone 19 has a contact ring 20 about its lower edge adapted to seal against brass or bronze rings 27 housed in an annular recess formed in a skirt 25 defining the outlet from the hopper 18. Gas or steam at a pressure to balance the furnace top pressure is admitted between the rings 27 through a pipe 31 when the cone is raised. In the latter position, Fig. 2, a sleeve 24 having an outwardly projecting flange 25<SP>1</SP> sliding within a recess formed in the skirt 25 rests on the cone. As the cone is lowered the sleeve falls to the position shown in Fig. 5 where it serves to deflect the falling charge from the sealing rings 27. An ore retainer groove 21 deflects the charge from the contact ring 20. The outlet from the hopper 11 is .protected in similar manner by a sleeve 14.
