Abstract

1,259,725. Heat treatment furnaces. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. 5 Jan., 1970 [13 Jan., 1969], No. 446/70. Heading F4B. A bell furnace 10 includes a base 11 and a removable inner cover 12 which define a chamber 13 in which an atmosphere gas is circulated by fan assembly 24. The atmosphere gas inlet and outlet pipes 31, 32 respectively pass into the sand or Woods metal filled sealing trough in which the cover 12 sits. The base 11 is provided with a porous refractory pedestal 16 covered by a gas tight sheath 17 including an annular bottom plate 44 which is welded to outer and inner annular side plates 45, 46 respectively, molten lead filled outer and inner annular sealing troughs 50, 51 respectively and annular top plate 47 the outer and inner peripheral flanges 48, 49 respectively of which sealingly depend into the lead filled troughs. The side plates are gastightly secured to the troughs either by similar depending flanges or by welding. A protective hydrogen atmosphere supplied and discharged through pipes 55, 56 is circulated within the chamber 60 defined by the gas-tight sheath 17, at a higher pressure than the atmosphere gas circulating within the chamber 13.
