Abstract
1448237 Top-blowing process EISENWERKGES MAXIMILLIANSHUTTE mbH 31 Dec 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 48535/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] In a method of top lancing molten metallurgical material, a hydrocarbon in gaseous or liquid form is supplied as a protective fluid through a lance outer conduit 10a and oxygen is supplied separately through an inner conduit 10b. The outer conduit is coated with refractory material 12 from the tip of the lance to a position above the surface of the melt. In the process a skull 14 forms that protects the tip of the lance, but the skull is porous and allows the flow of protective fluid to continue into the melt.
