Abstract

Powdered material is injected into a metallurgical melt 6, for example a steel melt, for refining and/or decarburisation of the melt, the material being supplied to the melt via a through-channel 5 in at least one arc electrode 4 which terminates above the surface of the melt. An arc 7 is maintained between the electrode(s) 4 and the melt 6 while the powdered material is continuously supplied with the help of a carrier gas 3, for example argon, other inert gas, nitrogen, oxygen or air, under such a pressure that the powdered material penetrates down into the melt below the surface thereof and the desired reaction in the melt is obtained. Suitably, the powdered material is given such a speed by the carrier gas that it penetrates into the melt at least 5 mm, preferably at least 1 cm, for example from 10 to 30 cm. <IMAGE>
