Abstract
Tanning-agents are prepared by heating cyclic hydrocarbons to a temperature below 100 DEG C. with excess of sulphuric acid to obtain a sulphonated condensation product of resinous character; agents which either enter into or promote condensation, such as formaldehyde, ketones, phosphoryl chloride, or thionyl chloride, may be added. According to examples, crude naphthalene or anthracene oil are heated on the water-bath with sulphuric acid until sulphonated, a little formaldehyde is then added, and the heating continued until the product solidifies to a resinous mass soluble in water. The free sulphuric acid in the product may be neutralized by an alkali or other base, and excess of alkali may be added to convert the condensed sulphonic acid into sulphonate. The products may be used in tanning, either alone or in admixture with vegetable tanning-extracts; the vegetable extracts are solubilized and decolorized by this admixture. Specification 7137/13 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 19502/90, 10321/93, 10322/93, 10323/93, 4648/11, 7137/13, and 7138/13, also to 18259/13, 144,657, and 144,677, [all in Class 76, Leather].
