Benzoquinone dyes which dye wool and leather in various shades of brown are prepared by condensing two molecular proportions of a nitroaminodiphenylamine sulphonic acid (which may be further substituted) with one molecular proportion of a benzoquinone such as chloranil. In examples, chloranil is condensed in aqueous solution in presence of sodium carbonate with 4-nitro-41-aminodiphenylamine-2-sulphonic acid or with amino - anilido-dinitro-diphenylamine-o-sulphonic acid obtained by condensing 1 : 2 : 4-chlordinitrobenzene with sodium 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylamine-2-sulphonate.
