Abstract

Tanning, wetting and emulsifying agents are prepared by condensing aromatic sulphonic acids with a compound which contains in the molecule an active methylol group and an amino group, and which has been made from urea or thiourea and ammonia condensed together with an aldehyde in acid solution. As sulphonic acids are specified b -naphthalene-, propyl-naphthalene-, and lignin-sulphonic acids, and those products prepared from alkyl-naphthalene sulphonic acids having wetting and emulsifying properties. In an example, formalin, and ammonium sulphate are heated together in solution at 70 DEG C., urea is slowly added, and the mixture kept heated for several hours. b -naphthalene sulphonic acid is then added to the resinous product and the mixture heated at 100 DEG C., and then, after cooling, neutralized wholly or partly with ammonia, caustic soda, AR(OH)3, Cr(OH)3, or by buffering. In a modification, a phenolic, urea, or other synthetic resin free of sulphonic groups may be included in the reaction mixture.
