Abstract
Tanning-agents are obtained by condensing a dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone with glycollic acid in the presence of a sulphonating agent. Specified sulphones which may be treated are 4 : 41 - dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone, 4 : 41 - dihydroxy - 3 : 31 - dimethyldiphenyl sulphone, 2 : 21 - dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone, and corresponding sulphones containing halogen atoms or carboxylic, ester or amino groups, such as 4 : 41-dihydroxy-3 : 31-dibromodiphenyl sulphone. The sulphonating agent may be sulphuric or chlorsulphonic acid or oleum, and the process may be effected at 120-160 DEG C. in the presence or absence of a diluent or a water-binding acid or acid anhydride. The products may be used in association with vegetable tanning-agents, such as sumach or gall-nut extract, or with synthetic tanning agents, such as the products described in Specification 425,037; they are useful also for modifying the colour of chrome-tanned leather. An example is given of the manufacture of a tanning-agent from 4 : 41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone, glycollic acid and sulphuric acid.
