1459411 Lids for pressure vessels C N HILLIER 18 March 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 9795/73 Heading F2P A pressure vessel having a lid 12, sealing means 16 between the wall of the vessel 10 and the lid, has control means on the lid for effecting sealing engagement between the sealing means and the vessel wall when the lid is in the closed position, and a movable catch member 28 for preventing and permitting opening of the vessel, the catch member being prevented from moving by the control means when the lid in in the closed position. The control means comprises a movable collar 22 integrally formed with a hand wheel 20. The movable collar 22 is mounted on a spigot 18 having at its lower end a plate 14. The movable collar 22 has an annular groove 27 in which is located lever 26 pivotally mounted on the lid at 25 and to which the catch member 28 is pivotally connected. The catch member is engaged with projection 30 on the vessel when the lid is in the closed position. Access to the vessel may be obtained by unscrewing the hand wheel 20 and collar 22 which (a) equalizes the pressure in the vessel with the ambient pressure by allowing passage of air through an opening in the lid 12 through which the spigot 18 slides and which is sealed in the closed position by sealing means 23 and (b) disengages catch member 28 from projection 30. The upper end of the catch member 28 extends into the path of movement of the hand wheel 20 if the catch member is not in a vertical position and thus prevents operation of the hand wheel to close the lid unless the hook 29 is aligned for engagement with the projection 30. A magnetic device may be fitted to attract the catch member to its vertical position ready for engagement with the projection 30 and the lid may be provided with a safety valve 33.
