Abstract

1459114 Rolling fillets HAYES-ALBION CORP 12 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 39738/74 Heading B3M [Also in Division B8] A textile spool comprising flanges 14 secured to a barrel 12 and each having a hub 16 with a cylindrical surface 17 forming a continuation of the barrel 12, a retaining surface 18 extending radially outwardly from the surface 17, each flange 14 comprising an aluminium casting provided with an annular concave surface or fillet 24 between the surfaces 17, 18, the cast aluminium material forming each fillet 24 having a residual compressive stress therein when the spool is in unloaded condition, is made by, at each end, forming a concave annular fillter 24a on a radius having a dimension in excess of that desired for the finished dimension of the fillet 24. A compressive force is applied to the fillet 24a by a roller 28 having a convex peripheral profile 30 bordered by portions 32, 34 at right angles to each other to engage the surfaces 18, 17 to limit the action of the compressive force to ensure that the fillet is rolled to the desired radius. In an example, a fillet 24a is cut to a radius of 0À125 inch and rolled to a radius of 0À093 inch by the application of a compressive force of 2500 lbs. In a modification, shot peening, instead of rolling, is employed to apply the compressive force to the surface 24a.
