Abstract

1,205,364. Reinforced plastics spools. E. HAFNER. 23 May, 1969 [15 June, 1968], No. 26488/69. Heading B8M. A reinforced plastics spool comprises a pair of flange discs of plastics material, a spool core and a reinforcing metal insert 7 for each flange disc, each of the metal inserts having a plurality of apertures 8, 9 through which plastics material from the respective flange disc extends, the edges of the apertures being embedded in the plastics material. Each flange disc is preferably double-walled, the outer wall 1 being provided with the metal insert 7, and the plastics material extending through the apertures 8 forming plugs 10 which are adhesively secured to the other flange wall 2. The outer flange wall 1 and the reinforcing metal insert 7 are preferably profiled in the peripheral direction. In an alternative embodiment, the outer flange wall and respective metal insert extends at an angle to the inner flange wall, ribs being provided on the outer flange wall on the side adjacent the inner flange wall so that the parts can be adhesively secured. In a further embodiment each flange disc is provided with two spaced reinforcing metal inserts. The outer flange wall 1 is provided with an axially extending annular rim 6 forming the hub of the spool. The core may be strengthened by a further annular rim 11 spaced radially outwards from the rim 6 and contacting the radially inner face of the core.
