Abstract
1458755 Hydrodemetallization of residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 28 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973 29 July 1974] 51563/74 Addition to 1438645 Heading C5E A process for the catalytic conversion of a residual oil comprises first demetallizing the oil and then catalytically converting the demetallized oil; the demetallization is carried out by contacting the oil with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising 0À1-15 parts by weight of one or more metals having hydrogenation activity per 100 parts of a silica carrier which has a loss on ignition of less than 1%, or of less than 0À5% if the catalyst comprises vanadium and meeting the requirements (1) p/d>3À5- 0À02v, in which p is the specific average pore diameter in nm., d is the specific average particle diameter in mm. and v is the percentage of the total pore volume that consists of pores with a diameter larger than 100 nm.; (2) the total pore volume is larger than 0À40 ml./g.; (3) v is smaller than 50; and (4) the specific surface area is larger than 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., with the proviso that, if the catalyst has such a p and d that the quotient p/d is at most 10-0À15 v, the catalyst also meets the requirements (a) the nitrogen pore volume is larger than 0À60 ml./g., (b) the specific surface area is larger than 150 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and (c) p is larger than 5 nm. Examples compare the use of catalysts of Ni, Ni+V, Co+Mo, and Ni+Mo on silica carriers with the use of catalysts of Ni+V or Ni + Mo on alumina.
