Abstract

1438645 Hydrodemetallization of residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 5 July 1973 [7 July 1972 5 March 1973] 31966/72 and 10528/73 Heading C5E In a process for the catalytic conversion of residual hydrocarbon oil the oil is first demetallized and subsequently catalytically converted; the demetallization is carried out by contacting the oil with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more metals having hydrogenation activity on a carrier and meeting either the requirements A or the requirements B-A (1) 10À0-0À15v#p/d>3À5- 0À02v in which p is the specific average pore diameter in nm., d is the specific average particle diameter in mm., and v is the percentage of the total pore volume that consists of pores with a diameter larger than 100 nm., (2) v is smaller than 50, (3) the nitrogen pore volume is larger than 0À6 ml./g., (4) the surface area is larger than 150 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and (5) p is larger than 5. B (1) p/d>10À0-0À15 v, (2) v is smaller than 50, (3) the total pore volume is larger than 0À4 ml./g., and (4) the surface area is larger than 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The demetallization can be carried out at 300 -450‹ C. and 75-250 bar using a catalyst comprising (a) Mo, V or W and/or (b) Ni or Co on an alumina, silica or silica-alumina support. The catalytic conversion processes envisaged are catalytic cracking, hydrocracking and hydrodesulphurization.
