Abstract

1410924 Catalytic hydrodesulphurization of residual oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971 (2)] 59547/71 and 59548/71 Heading C5E The catalytic hydrodesulphurization with catalyst replenishment of residual oils is carried out using a catalyst having a pore volume above 0À30 ml./g. and which is in the form either of particles less than 10% of the pore volume of which is present in pores of diameter above 100 nm., said particles having a specific average pore diameter (p, measured in nm.) and specific average particle diameter (d, measured in mm.) that: (a) if the oil has a total vanadium plus nickel content of at most 120 p.p.m. wt. then 0À025 Î P H2 # p/(d)<SP>0À6</SP> # 0À1ÎP H2 -5À0, the hydrogen partial pressure P H2 being at least 70 bar; or (b) if the oil has a total vanadium plus nickel content above 120 p.p.m. then 4À5 > p/(d)<SP>0À6</SP> > 14À0 and the hydrogen partial pressure P H2 being at least 50 bar. The hydrodesulphurization can be carried out at 300-475‹ C. and 50-200 bar using a catalyst containing Ni and/or Co together with Mo and/or W on a support such as alumina or silica-alumina. The hydrodesulphurization can be preceded by a demetallization by catalytic hydrogenation.
