Abstract

1523343 Hydrogenation of heavy oils SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 25 Sept 1975 [27 Sept 1974] 39291/75 Heading C5E Heavy hydrocarbon oil having a C 5 -asphaltene content above 5% by weight and a V k210 above 30 cSt is treated, to reduce its C 5 -asphaltene content by at least 30% and its V k210 by at least 50%, by contacting at at least 400‹ C., a hydrogen partial pressure of at least 100 bar and a space velocity of at most 2 1.1<SP>-1</SP>.h<SP>-1</SP> with a catalyst comprising one or more metals having hydrogenation activity on a carrier and which meets the requirements (1) P/d>3À5-0À02 v (p is the specific average pore diameter in nm, d is the specific average particle diameter in mm and v is the percentage of the total pore volume that consists of pores with a diameter larger than 100 nm); (2) the total pore volume is larger than 0.40 ml./g.; (3) v is smaller than 50; (4) the specific surface area is larger than 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g.; and (5) if p/d#10-0.15 v then (a) the nitrogen pore volume is larger than 0.60 ml./g., (b) the specific surface area is larger than 150 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., and (c)p is larger than 5 nm. The process can be used to treat crude, topped crude oil, or long or short residues at 400-500‹ C., and a hydrogen partial pressure of 100-300 bars in fixed or moving beds or in the fluid phase. The catalysts used in examples are prepared by granulating soot, alumina, silica, or spray-dried alumina plus 2% glass powder on a rotating disc with aqueous citric acid or lignin sulphonate and impregnating the granular carrier with (a) nickel nitrate, ammonium molybdate and monoammonium phosphate, (b) nickel nitrate and vanadyl oxalate, or (c) cobalt or nickel nitrate, ammonium molybdate and hydrogen peroxide.
