Abstract

1458348 Life saving apparatus INTERCONTINENTAL MARINE Ltd 16 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 51931/75 Divided out of 1433791 Headings B7A and B7S A life saving buoy intended for use on large passenger carrying ships, e.g. liners or ferries comprises a hull 131 filled with foamed plastics material 133, a reel 137 carrying cable for anchoring the buoy to the sunken ship which carried the buoy, a reel 142 carrying a buoyant mooring line for other liferafts or lifeboats from the sunken ship, a working deck 148 with a deck house 150 and inflatable liferafts 162 stowed in containers on the deck 148. In use the liferafts 162 are launched inflated and tied to the mooring line as it is unwound from the reel 142 sequentially. The buoy may be powered and have a propeller 158 steerable about a vertical axis and protected by a screen 160 and has searchlights 154, a radio antenna 153, a hinged mast 155 carrying a radar reflector and mooring lines carried on reels 172. It may be carried on the ship by conventional gravity davits or on an elevated runway so that it can be launched from either side of the ship. Mooring.-The buoy can be moored against the distressed ship's side by the deployment of weights 180 suspended on tag lines (not shown) on its side remote from the ship's side. The other end of the tag lines are attached to mooring ropes extending to and attached to the ship. The tension in these lines holds the buoy against the ship's side.
