Abstract

1,093,860. Mooring ships. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Dec. 16, 1965 [Dec. 18, 1964], No. 53441/65. Headings B7A and B7S. [Also in Division E1] A floating wharf, or so-called mooring system, where a ship 7 can receive and/or discharge a liquid cargo, e.g. petroleum products, comprises a pair of steel frames 13, 14 containing buoyancy tanks 11 and connected to each other at their adjacent ends by a horizontallyorientated hinge 15 so that their longitudinal axes form an obtuse angle, the other end of the frame 13 being attached to bearings 9, 10 on an anchored buoy, or tower, 1 whereby it can freely rotate about a vertical axis 5. While the ship is receiving or discharging cargo through hoses 22 connected to a rotatable pipe-coupling 23 on the buoy, the ship is secured by mooring lines 18 attached to a rotatable portion 4 of the buoy and further mooring lines 19, 20, 21 attached to capstans 17 on the frames 13, 14, fenders 16 being provided on the frame 14. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown), the wharf or quay includes a pair of frames (57, 58), which are generally similar to the frames 13, 14, and an additional frame (42) that is similar to the frame (57) but held apart therefrom by springs (55) mounted on the associated buoy (40), the ship (48) being moored between the frames (42, 57). In another embodiment, Figs. 9 to 12 (not shown), the wharf or quay comprises a pair of frames (71, 72), which are rotatably attached to a buoy (70), and a pair of flexible buoyant tubes (75, 76) connected to the free ends of the frames to support a pair of mooring lines (78) for the bow of a ship (82) and buoyant hoses (81) for delivering cargo to or from the ship. A buoy (not shown in the drawings) may indicate the point (77) where the lines (78) are connected to the tubes (75, 76) while the wharf is not in use. The frames are brought into contact with the hull of the ship by further mooring lines (79, 80) as the ship approaches the buoy (70), the said lines being connected to the lines (78) at the point (77) and the free ends of the frames while the wharf is not in use.
