Abstract
1458085 Fluid heaters; burners; water heaters SIOUX STEAM CLEANER CORP 8 April 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 15498/74 Headings F4S F4A and F4T In a fluid heater comprising an outer cylindrical casing 10 containing a burner and associated housing 12 at one end thereof and a plurality of series connected and concentrically arranged helical coils 60, 62, 64, part of the air supplied to the housing 12 by a blower (22, Fig. 1, not shown) is fed to the burner through two sets of ports 52 and 110 while the remainder is supplied via ports 84 to one end of an annular passageway 78 to keep the casing 10 cool. The cooling air leaving the other end of the passageway 78 through ports 86 and 96 is admixed in a space 98 with the combustion gases from the burner, the resulting mixture leaving the heater through ducts 36 and 38 which may be provided with controllable dampers. The coils 60, 62, 64 are supported within the casing by an arrangement comprising a cross-shaped member 66, a dish-shaped member 67, and a plurality of longitudinal sets of support members 68, 70 and 72; each set includes a number of V-shaped members, e.g. 68a, 68b, 68c and 68d. The annular passageway 78, which includes a number of V- shaped support members 80, is defined between the casing 10 and an expandable cylindrical member 74. The member 74 has a set of spring loaded expansion bolt assemblies 76 mounted between flanges 74a and 74b defining a longitudinal expansion joint which allows expansion and contraction of the coils 60, 62 and 64. The combustion gases leaving the burner are constrained to follow a multipass flow path over the heat exchange coils before entering the space 98 where they admix with the cooling air from passageway 78. Fluid to be heated, e.g. water, after passing through the coils leaves through an outlet pipe 34. Burner fuel is pumped through a line 30 to a nozzle 48. The burner also includes an electric igniter having a pair of igniter probes 56 and (57, Fig. 6) and a pair of flame detectors 58 and 59; the detector 58 includes a mirror 58a.
