Abstract
1457749 Photoconductive varistor GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 27 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59807/73 Heading H1K In a photoconductive varistor comprising a polycrystalline sintered body 10 of zinc oxide and a minor constituent consisting of at least one other metal oxide and/or halide, a pair of electrodes 11, 12 disposed on a surface of the body are separated by a gap 15 which, in use, is illuminated to control the current flowing between the electrodes. In an example, a varistor disc comprises zinc oxide, with bismuth oxide and antimony oxide as secondary constituents, and small amounts of other metal oxides. Other constituents mentioned are beryllium oxide, bismuth oxide, bismuth fluoride and cobalt fluoride. The electrodes are of evaporated or sputtered aluminium, zinc or platinum or of silver paint. Methods of operating the varistor are described and claimed in Specification 1,457,748. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,366,008.
