Abstract

1456025 Supplying additional air OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 21 Nov 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 54016/73 Heading B1W [Also in Division F1] An I.C. engine comprises a combustion chamber an exhaust port communicating with said chamber and communicating with an exhaust gas discharge system through which successive pulses of exhaust gas flow in response to periodic opening of the exhaust port, the discharge system including means operable subsequent to opening of the exhaust port for generating a returning negative pressure wave travelling in the discharge system toward the exhaust port, and the system also including normally-closed port means located in spaced relation from the exhaust port, which port means are opened in response to the returning negative pressure wave to introduce air into the discharge system. An exhaust passage 119 connected to the exhaust port of a two-stroke engine has an open end 123 and an air inlet port 127. A reed valve 131 is mounted inside the passage and allows air to enter during negative pressure pulses in the passage. Fig. 2 shows a construction in which an inner chamber 61 is mounted on the inner wall of a muffler 17, air being admitted via a reed valve 31. A heat concentration zone is formed by an insulating lining 53 e.g. of ceramic material and a heat sink 55 e.g. a stainless steel wire mesh. Alternatively a catalyst to promote after-burning may be provided instead of the heat sink.
