Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove uncombusted HC and CO contained in the exhaust gas, by feeding ozone from an ozone generating means to the portion of exhaust pipe where relative density of HC contained in the exhaust gas is high, and thereby oxiding HC and CO by ozone.
CONSTITUTION: An annular ozone feeding passage 5 is formed on the outside of exhaust port 4 near combustion chamber 1, and the exhaust port 4 and ozone feeding passage 5 are communicated with each other through a plurality of connecting ports 6. An ozone generating means 7, which causes discharge by impressing between electrodes a high voltage supplied from high-voltage source 8 and converts oxygen in air located between and near the electrodes into ozone, is provided in a passage adapted for feeding the secondary air to ozone feeding passage 5. With such an arrangement, when exhaust valve 3 is opened during the exhaust stroke of engine, exhaust gas containing uncombusted HC and CO at a high density is located near the wall surface of combustion chamber 1 and exhaust port 4, as shown at A in the drawing. Therefore, ozone is fed into exhaust port 4 from ports 6 for purifying the exhaust gas by way of oxidation.
