Abstract

1455433 Gas-phase reactions ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 27 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 55031/73 Heading B1F A catalytic gas-phase reaction is carried out by contacting the reactants serially with a plurality of honeycomb monolithic catalyst bodies having individual flowpaths therethrough essentially in the direction of gas flow through the bodies and at least two of the bodies being in a spaced apart relationship such that the effluents from the flowpaths of one body prior to contacting a subsequent body are commingled in turbulent flow in the open space between bodies. The length of the individual flowpath divided by the squareroot of the cross sectional area is less than about 20. The bodies are 0.1 to 1 inch in thickness with 10 to 2500 flow through paths/sq inch. The reaction is applicable to the oxidation of automobile exhausts etc.
