Abstract

1454625 Direction finder ELTRO GmbH GES FUR STRAHLUNGSTECHNIK 3 Sept 1974 [30 Oct 1973] 38518/74 Heading H4D In a photoelectric direction finder, of the kind comprising a lens producing a circular out of focus image 19, Fig. 4, of a point source object on a quadrant type photodetector 8, 9, 10, 11 the X, Y position output signals of the direction finder, based directly of the outputs of the four detecting elements 8, 9, 10 11, vary non-linearly with the position of the image. To achieve the linearity and/or produce a signal useful in determining the distance of the object, a fifth detector element 12 may be formed on the quadrant detector taking out a section of each of the quadrant detector elements 8, 9, 10, 11. The fifth element may have the straight line section star shape as shown, or may be a star formed from four hyperboli, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, a star shaped diaphragm may be interposed between the lens and the detector to cast an inhibiting shadow on said detector.
