Abstract

145,396. Wilcomb, J. F. June 20, 1919, [Convention date]. Circular machines. - Comprises an improved rib-knitting machine organization in which the form of knitting-unit described in Specification 141,660 is employed. The improvements are applicable in part to machines with a single row of needles. The needle unit comprises a needle member having a hook 2 and a stem 1, and slidably mounted in a quill comprising a stem 4 of channel form for receiving the needle, a nose 5, rise 6, swell 7, drop 8, throat 9, butt 10 and a stop 11 fixed or riveted between the walls of the stem. The dial needle butts 3 can be operated nearer the verge or in a circle of a larger radius than heretofore owing to the absence of latches and to the construction of the dial with a channel 14 into which the needle hooks recede and draw loops, also the dial cams can be of smaller angle than cams set nearer the centre and a larger number of knitting-units per inch can be provided. The web holders 12 have blunt inwardly projecting noses 13 which hold the dial loops in a definite position on the needle stems leaving just enough space for the fabric to pass down. The web-holder dial mounting is designed to avoid the accumulation of lint and comprises an outwardly extending ledge 16 of the needle cylinder to which the web-holder bed 17<1> is clamped by a plate 17 and screw 18. Sinkers 19 operated by a cam 20 may interlock with the web-holders 12, which are forced inwards by a spring band 24 and have shoulders engaging projections of the sinkers. The swells 7 of the dial quills serve to keep the fabric loops separate from the newly fed yarn during the period when the needle hook is entering the swell. The needles are constructed of thinner material than it is practicable for latch needles do be as they are supported in the elevated position by a prolongation 15 of the dial needle slot and by the quills at all times. This allows more space for the yarn and for the passage of lumps &c. and there is less liability of imperfections occurring in the fabric. A single row of needles may be supported in the same way by relatively fixed needle guards or supports for resisting the thrust of the yarn.
